In solo mode, you are desperately guessing :) yes, you and have to check all the permutations randomly, it is going to be tired and exhausted

A friend gives you hint, so basically you skips all the process to find all the letters , now leave you only one last character to find. But in this case, you still need to search but this time the area was covered. 

This idea of find the right solution is because of two things 

1. You receive a very generous clue to reveal the word 

2. You know where not to fill in the letters which are already occupied from 1 - 6, you only need to guess the 7th place
